SSAI, explained: why streaming's ads are stitched in before you ever press play

When an ad break arrives on a FAST channel and the ad rolls with no spinner, no volume jump, and no janky player handoff, you're almost certainly watching server-side ad insertion at work. Instead of the app on your TV fetching ads itself (client-side insertion, or CSAI), an SSAI service sits between the viewer and the channel's video feed, detects the ad-break markers broadcasters embed in the stream, runs an ad decision, and stitches the ads directly into the video each viewer receives. To the player — and mostly to ad blockers — it all looks like one continuous broadcast.
The approach dominates where TV needs to feel like TV: live sports, FAST channels, and premium broadcast streams, where per-viewer ad decisions have to coexist with broadcast-grade smoothness, as industry guides from Equativ and others lay out. It's also why the hyperscalers sell it as infrastructure — AWS's Elemental MediaTailor, for instance, prices the service per thousand ad insertions.
The market reflects the shift: Dataintelo sizes global SSAI at $5.8 billion in 2025, projected toward $17.4 billion by 2034 (~13% annual growth). The vendor landscape spans cloud providers (AWS MediaTailor), FAST infrastructure companies (Amagi, Wurl), and ad-tech platforms (AniView and others).
What's next: the industry's current debate is server-guided ad insertion (SGAI), a hybrid where the server still controls the break but the client fetches ads — keeping SSAI's seamlessness while restoring client-side measurement fidelity. Several 2026 CTV builds are heading that direction, per ppc.land's overview. Either way, the direction of travel is the same: the ad break is becoming part of the stream itself, not an interruption bolted onto it.
